Barbara Kahn painting a mural

About Me . . .

When I was in kindergarten I did a crayon drawing that the teacher was moved to bring to the attention of the Principal. That's when I first knew I was an artist. My parents gave me a set of oil paints for my ninth birthday together with a certificate for painting lessons from May Palmer Hawkins of Newburgh, New York. Her dynamic teachings and inventive lifestyle influenced the rest of my life. I went to her studio once a week until graduating high school. In my senior year of high school, my art instructor, Leo Irrera, taught me the basic techniques of visionary painting, and urged me to apply to the Rhode Island School of Design. I did and was accepted. There I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and was chosen as the one student in the school to represent RISD at the prestigious Yale Norfolk Summer School of Music and Art. RISD subsequently selected me, along with seventeen other students to spend my senior year of college in Italy. After studying in Rome, I completed my thesis project in Venice, where I painted views of the canals from my rooftop done in oils and watercolors. There I was able to study the great masters works in the museums and often sketched directly from the paintings or sculptures, learning about color, composition, perspective and anatomy.

My work has been exhibited in museums and galleries on both coasts of the United States. (Click on Group Exhibitions at left for more on this)

The galleries where my work is currently shown are:

  • Blue Moon Bookstore, Oak Avenue, Spruce Pine
  • Little Switzerland General Store in Little Switzerland
  • TRAC (Toe River Arts Council) both Spruce Pine & Burnsville
  • Crabtree Creek Gallery on 19E in Micaville, NC, and
  • Contact me for more information

I teach classes and workshops in art, herbs, aromatherapy and calligraphy in several places in North Carolina. See Classes & Workshops page.

My art is a reflection of my classical education, travels and postgraduate metaphysical studies. My style stems from a combination of my inner visions and outward beauty here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. My studio is in Little Switzerland, North Carolina.

I have written the cookbook, The Organic Gourmet; delicious and nutritious recipes inspired by world cuisine. That book, published in 1995, is now out of print. These days I am working on a new cookbook, Spirit of the Blue Ridge; Gourmet Organic Recipes for Life.

I am currently completing another project, The Insight Deck; a set of fifty-four cards that fuse my paintings, philosophy and writings. The Insight Deck Handbook accompanies it with psychic interpretations by Angela Moore plus my own numerical interpretations, affirmations and meditative journeys. (Click on Other Work to see both the cards and the cookbook).
